...considering we just bought a top of the line, $2,000 eliptical from Sears for under $900 including delivery and assembly. Next lowest price (not including deliver or assembly, mind you) was around $1,700. Also, they’ve been slowly closing up shop for, what, about 15 years now?

Yeah, but it’s still sad. I grew up trusting sears and craftsman tools.

I went there recently, for the first time in a long time, to try and get a tool and it was depressing as hell. The shelves were sparse and two people were helping me because they had nothing else to do.

They love to blame Amazon, but I remember going into Sears as a teenager, back when Amazon only sold books, and thinking “This place won’t last long” (I shopped mostly at American Eagle, Structure, etc)

I also said B Dalton and Waldenbooks wouldn’t last long. Because Amazon sold books.

Selling overpriced mid market...anything...is retail death now. They shoulda moved craftsman upmarket to compete with SnapOn and/or moved the clothing side downmarket to price compete with Walmart. Just like the middle class, middle retail is just a memory.

It’s amazing to realize how badly they muffed the online retail explosion over the past 10 years, when they had one of the largest percentage of catalog sales of any retailer. They should have easily merged that presence into an online catalog experience, where you could either have it shipped to your home or pick up your purchase at a nearby Sears. But, nope. The CEO had big plans on selling customer data and making your shopping experience a complete pain in the ass.

Yep, hard for a lot of people to remember that Sears WAS Amazon for many decades. Real estate is expensive.

Well put. It’s almost like the polarization of opinions, images, or even politics. People want to brag about either high quality or low price to gain status. Nobody wants a middle ground or a compromise.

Or a midsize sedan.

I think most big box retailers are going to go under, Walmart included. Membership style stores will remain intact. Open to public retailers will be replaced by a world’s fair style exposition. I suspect when all retailers finally shut down from people who browse, then immediately find the lowest price online and buy from there, there’ll have to be a manufacturer supported trial marketplace. Old malls etc. will find new life. These marketplaces will be paid for by prices built into the merchandise.

I thought they just licensed it out? Don’t they still “own” the trademark?

There is a market for that, and JC Penny owns it. they tried to go upmarket a few years back, and it killed them. They went back to their niche, and I’m glad of it. I’m a loyal customer.

damn you! I was like... let me see what sears has for tools.... FUCKING RABBIT HOLE!!! Been in there for hours now. Nothing is super discounted. Nothing is super appealing... but there is so much of it. I want to look at it all.

Ok. So they sold it but retain some rights for the next 15 years... if they’re even around that long.

There’s a Sears right by my house, and I swear the tire center is their life support. The main lot is usually empty, but the tire center lot always has cars in it and there are always customers around.
